Call for Chapters

There is a forthcoming book publication entitled Kinetic Emergence: The Theory and Practice of Motion Design, to be published by Common Ground Publishing, an international publisher at the leading edge in the investigations of the critical questions of our time and design educators are cordially invited to submit a chapter proposal for consideration in this book.

This proposed collection intends to be an exploration of the rapidly expanding area of Motion Design. We are witnessing an exponential rise in the application space, now inclusive of interaction design, product interfaces, kinetic data visualizations, brand building, title design, exhibits and environments.

Kinetic Emergence: The Theory and Practice of Motion Design seeks to create the opportunity for dialogue and synthesis between the academic theoretical framework and what is being done in professional practice.

For those working in academia, we seek theoretical frameworks being developed around the principles of motion design. Complementary to this, we ask practitioners to share case studies, best practices, and innovative uses of motion design. With an aim to promote dialogue and cross-disciplinary discourse, we encourage contributors to explore and illuminate connections between the domains.

We invite contributors to submit proposals in the following topic areas. We ask contributors to identify the main topic area they expect their proposed chapter to within, but acknowledge that these topics may need to shift as we review contributions, so they should not be seen as overly limiting.

Part 1: Theoretical Perspectives
As motion design is a rapidly growing and changing field, there has not been extensive opportunity to develop a theoretical framework around it. Chapters in this section will explore underlying ideas of motion design—its position in the design world, the science behind how we perceive and respond to motion, and its opportunities for growth as an intellectual discipline.

Section 1: Motion Design as an Interdisciplinary Endeavor
Due to the fact that motion design exists at a busy intersection between animation, visual communication, sound design, and content, the disciplinary lines are blurry. Multiple perspectives make it exciting and intriguing, but also very challenging to teach and discuss. Essays in this section will explore these points of convergence and share perspectives on what they mean for the discipline as a whole.

Section 2: Motion Communication Theory
In the dimension of motion, are we challenged to develop new theories around how to communicate messages and structure narrative or experiences in the context of time-based, non-linear forms with dimensions of sound, text, and movement. Essays in this section will look at ways people craft narratives using motion and the ways in which meaning (connotative and denotative) is created in the context of motion design.

Section 3: The Science and Perception of Motion
In the context of motion design, issues around cognition, visual perception, and reading take on different meanings. An exploration of the science of perception, biologically and psychologically, will be the focus of these essays.

Section 4: Experimental Motion Design and Aesthetics
These chapters will feature examples of works and ideas that explore the use of motion for purposes of discovery, provocation, or expression, without necessarily being tied to an application—motion design in the arts.

We believe the strength of this collection is the ability to give voice to a range of perspectives and areas of expertise. We intend to select excellent and varied contributors–practitioners, theorists, educators, and professionals–appealing to a diverse set of readers.

We hope to shape the thinking and work of educators, students and practitioners of motion design, along with those who interact with designers, commissioning or responding to their work. Visual communication and product designers, cinematographers, interaction designers, marketers and consumers of moving images will all benefit from a deeper understanding of motion design.

Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit on or before 15 July 2016, a chapter proposal (1000 words max) clearly explaining the focus and concern of their proposed chapter. Proposals are accepted in English and may include figures/diagrams, etc. Your abstract must be your own original work and not duplicate any other previously published work or work currently under consideration for publication elsewhere. You must own the imagery or secure written permission to use or reproduce imagery prior to submitting the full chapter draft. Please use APA style citations. Manuscripts should be compiled in the following order:

  • Author(s), Title and Affiliation
  • Proposed topic area, e.g., Part 2: Practice & Application, Section 3: Kinetic Data Visualizations
  • Manuscript title
  • Main text
  • Acknowledgments and references

Authors will be notified by 15 August 2016 about the status of their proposals and sent chapter guidelines. Chapters are expected to be between 3,000 and 6,000 words in length. Full chapters are expected to be submitted by 01 October 2016, and all interested authors must consult the guidelines for manuscripts prior to submission.
