2018 AIGA Design Educators Community Conference Announcement
The DEC is pleased to announce that the 2018 Design Educators Community conference will be hosted by Herron School of Art + Design in Indianapolis. The conference, titled [Make], will take place in late spring of 2018. The specific dates and call for proposals will be announced in the coming months.
[Make] seeks to establish a space where designers, educators, and researchers can come together to discuss the concept of ‘making’ as it exists within today’s contexts. Designers sit at a unique intersection of the arts and social sciences where making serves as a distinct asset to our process. Whether planning new healthcare services, organizing a community, building a website, or speculating on the future, designers have an inherent drive to make as a way to facilitate solutions. Making is a loaded word for many designers. A focus on process via Design Thinking has provided us exposure to colleagues and opportunities outside of design but this shift has sometimes come at the expense of the legitimacy of making. For many designers, being labeled a ‘maker’ may be perceived as a slight.
Despite this, designers know that making is complex and heterogeneous. We do not make as a way to simply sharpen the end of a pre-defined process. We make to think, explain, and conceptualize. We make to communicate, mediate, and teach, to formalize, plan, and provoke, to explore, process, and improve.
[Make] is built to help us explore the full complexity of making and its applications.
The conference will be divided into four areas of focus: Make [community], Make [curriculum], Make [form], and Make [experiences]. These areas provide distinct lenses through which we can discuss the act of making.
The [Make] team is hard at work developing the brand (the image above is not the brand!), program, website, and call for proposals. Stay tuned to the DEC blog and social media for updates. We hope you Make [it] to Indy in 2018!
